We’ve got a fairly active weather pattern in the wings today. An upper level low will drop southeast from the western Great Lakes today and then across the Ohio Valley tonight and then will be over the southern Appalachians early Saturday. A surface low pressure area will develop off the middle Atlantic coast late Friday night and on Saturday. This low pressure area will then move slowly northeast and be over the Gulf of Maine by Sunday afternoon. We’ll see cloudy skies today with highs in the mid 40s and light and variable winds. Tonight should be cloudy with a slight chance of rain or snow showers after midnight. Lows will be in the mid 30s with light and variable winds. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Saturday should be cloudy with a slight chance of rain or snow showers in the morning, then a chance of rain showers in the afternoon. Highs will be in the mid 40s with north winds around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Saturday night should be cloudy with a chance of rain or snow showers. Lows will be in the lower 30s with north winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Weak high pressure will build across the region today serving up partial sunshine and milder temperatures. This will be short-lived however, as an upper level low currently over Hudson’s Bay will drop southeast tonight dragging an attendant cold front across the region. This will bring a renewed threat of showers and higher summit snow showers tonight and into Sunday. We’ll see mostly sunny skies this morning, giving way to clouds with a chance of rain showers this afternoon. Highs will be in the mid 50s with light and variable winds. Chance of rain is 40%. Tonight should be cloudy with showers likely mainly until midnight. Lows will be in the lower 40s with southwest winds around 10 mph. Chance of rain is 70%.

The Mailbox Trail beaver pond is full once again. The dam blew out during tropical storm Irene turing the pond into a soggy meadow. But beavers being beavers, they rebuilt, and the dam is just a foot or two below where it was before (it’s a tall dam too—a good 6-8 feet high!)

I love beech trees. Their smooth “elephant skin” bark is a pleasure to touch, and their leaves last long into the fall—often clear through winter—gradually bleaching from green to paper white. These trees are up past the beaver pond off the Mailbox Trail. Still worth a visit even on a rainy day!

An extended period of precipitation has begun over the region as an upper level trough of low pressure slowly moves across the northeast United States. Eventually this system will stall off the southern New England coast and develop an easterly fetch of moisture from the Atlantic late Wednesday into Friday. This will result in scattered to numerous showers over the area today and tonight, then more widespread rain Wednesday into Friday. Today showers are likely. A large area of low pressure centered this morning across the Ohio and mid-Mississippi River valleys will continue its slow northeastward progression eventually moving through our region later Thursday into Friday. In the meantime, we’ll continue to see gusty southerly winds and unseasonable warmth with high temperatures well into the 70s again today. We’ll see partly sunny skies today with a slight chance of showers west this afternoon. Highs will be in the mid 70s with south winds 15 to 20 mph gusting up to 30 mph. Chance of rain is 20%. Tonight should be cloudy with rain likely mainly after midnight. Lows will be in the mid 60s with southeast winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain is 70%.

The aforementioned low will arrive in earnest Thursday bringing rain which may be heavy at times. Highs will be in the lower 70s with southeast winds 15 to 20 mph. Chance of rain is near 100%. Rain will continue into Thursday night with lows in the upper 50s and south winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain is 90%.

Temperatures will be a good 15 to 20 degrees above normal with highs in the lower 70s and south winds 10 to 15 mph gusting up to 30 mph. This morning in Huntington at 6:30AM it’s currently 59 degrees and raining lightly under overcast skies. Winds are out of the southwest at 3-8 mph.
