Forecast Discussion:

Morning radar imagery shows the center of the low responsible for this historic flooding event now near Montreal. The low is expected to continue its trek northward with showers shutting down by this afternoon across the region. Indeed, showers have already shut down here in North Hero. Main stem rivers (Missisquoi, Lamoille, Winooski, Otter Creek) are all in flood stage at this hour and are expected to continue rising through the day today and crest sometime this afternoon. There are lots of road closures across the region. A good source for State road closure information is at www.newengland511.org. Note that this only includes State roads—there are many, many local road closures as well. Looking at the CoCoRaHS map, the big rainfall “winners” over the past 3 days of the event are Woodbury at 7.37″, Greensboro at 7.33″, and Middlesex at 7.21″. Rochester is reporting 5.92″ with 6.02″ in West Dover. And it’s still raining at this hour in all of those locations.

High pressure is expected to build in later this afternoon drying things out and bringing some sunshine west to east along with seasonably muggy conditions expected later today and into Wednesday. More rain is in the forecast, however, as low pressure over Hudsons Bay swings a series of shortwave troughs through the region midweek onward. We can expect showers and afternoon thunderstorms to crop back up Wednesday night into Thursday, and again on Friday. While we’re not talking about a lot of rain in any of these events, the already waterlogged soils will cause trouble for areas already effected by flooding. Unsettled conditions are expected to continue into the weekend.

About Today’s Photo:

The view south from our porch here in North Hero yesterday was a study in grays. With calm winds and occasionally heavy downpours, the surface of the lake took on an interesting mottled pattern.
